NEW RIG
July 31, 2003, we bought a 1999 40' Foretravel with 45,000 miles
on it. No slides. The goal was to begin to travel together
again. Since we'd bought the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee in February, 2002,
Barb has had to drive it while I'm in the truck every time we moved someplace
else and we really didn't like doing that. We know people who do that and
love it, it's just not what we liked. So, we sold the truck and traded the
trailer in on this coach, and at this point we love it. I got the
following from the www.foretravel.com
site.
It's titled, "50 Reasons to Love Your Foretravel - (Oh
well, 84 reasons...but who's counting?)"
- The Foretravel chassis: Drive the chassis
that really started it all…the Foretravel chassis. This unique chassis
design now sets the standard for coaches in this price range, And, as we
always have, we build it from the ground up.
- Drivability: Our superior
suspension along with our lower center-of-gravity and well-engineered
weight distribution provides extremely responsive and secure driving
characteristics. You have to drive one to experience the difference!
- 36/36 Full Coach Warranty: Think about
it…a full coach warranty on the chassis and the motorhome for a full 36
months or 36,000 miles. You won’t find a better, more comprehensive
motorhome warranty anywhere. Ours came with a 1 year
12,000 mile warrantee because it was used.
- Our reputation: You know us!
We’ve been around for over 35 years building great motorhomes and
creating satisfied customers.
- Air disc brakes: We think the ability to
stop is pretty important. That’s why every Foretravel built has
all-wheel air-operated disc brakes with anti-lock brakes standard. Most
motorhomes don’t even offer them as options.
- Allison transmission retarder:
We’re the only manufacturer to include an Allison transmission retarder
as standard equipment on every coach we build. Tests show that these
retarders provide almost twice the braking power of compression brakes and
almost three times the braking power of exhaust brakes. Sure, they cost
more. But isn’t your safety worth it?
- The Club: The Foretravel Motorcade Club
offers benefits and travel opportunities far beyond most other clubs.
Enjoy the experience...sharing the fun and fellowship of the RV lifestyle
with other Foretravel owners. First year membership
included with the purchase. Also, first year of FMCA (Family Motor
Coach Association).
- Willingness to customize:
Foretravel’s motto has for many years been “Built Especially for
You”. We will customize most models to meet your special needs or
desires, whether it is colors, interiors, floor plans or something else.
- Experienced production people: The average
age of a Foretravel production employee is 35 years, and the average
length of employment is over 10 years. We don’t have to “re-train”
our employees every year.
- Exclusivity of ownership:
Foretravel is a family and employee-owned corporation proud to manufacture
a limited number of very high quality motorhomes each year. That makes
every Foretravel owner very special to us. Last year
they built 171 coaches.
- Air leveling system: Foretravel’s unique
air leveling system provides a more dependable and safer leveling system
than hydraulic jacks. You’ll never have to crawl under your coach to
place jack pads or to free up a stuck jack. And, it keeps your coach level
automatically.
- Lower coach height: Having a
lower overall coach height (11’-6 1/2”) makes for a lower center of
gravity that noticeably improves handling and performance. You can also
get it under a 12’ overhead door
- Cabinetry: You’ve always heard about
Foretravel’s cabinet work, haven’t you? Well, it’s true. By
producing everything ourselves in-house, we provide the “fine furniture
quality” fit and finish you expect from Foretravel. Look at how
everything fits the way it should. Feel the finish. Then you‘ll see our
reputation is very well deserved.
- Size of chassis steel: It’s
all about strength. The wall thickness of the steel tubing used in our
chassis construction is 3/8” and 1/4” . Look for yourself. In a
Foretravel, you won’t find that light weight thin wall steel some others
use.
- Power Tech generators: A superb 10.0 kw
diesel generator from a great company. Standard on every Foretravel, they
provide a dependable and quiet power source, unequalled service after the
sale, and a long 3-year warranty. And, it’s mounted in a quiet box.
Well, the "quiet box" is for those built from 2000 on.
Wish ours had it, but......
- Gel cell batteries: Just
think...No maintenance, no water to check and refill, no corrosion, longer
life and a better, more dependable power source.
- Heated storage bays: Not only are they well
insulated, but heated. This is a must for cold weather camping. Imagine,
even in freezing temperatures, your stowed items stay warm and cozy.
- Shower size: We build our
showers as large as we can make them…probably the largest in the
industry. Plus, we add a showerhead slide bar making it easy to adjust and
direct the water where you need it.
- Dual fuel fill: Now you can re-fuel from
either side, or both sides at once. It takes the worry and stress out of
re-fueling, and saves you time in the process.
- Good use of space: We don’t
waste space! If there’s a place, we use it for something. That’s why
you’ll find an abundance of good useable cabinet and closet space in
every Foretravel. Compare for yourself...you’ll see what we mean.
- Creation Insulated Windows: These fine
insulated, thermo-break windows make it much more efficient to heat and
cool your Foretravel, and they quietly go about their work of reducing the
outside noise inside your coach.
- Power mirrors: At the touch
of a finger you can easily adjust our chrome exterior mirrors to suit your
driving needs. And, they’re heated for quick defrosting.
What surprised me was that the "fish-eye" mirrors adjust from
inside the coach as well.
- Solid Surface Counter Tops: There are lots
of advantages to Foretravel’s solid surface counter top material. First,
we make it ourselves to the proper size, so there are no seams and it
fits! It’s also easy to maintain, easily repairable and looks great!
- Furniture fabrics: We buy our
interior fabrics direct from the mills, then have them flame retardant and
soil resistant treated. You’ll notice an abundance of very high quality
fabrics and leathers in every Foretravel.
- Drinking Water Filter: We include a drinking
water filter in every Foretravel because you never know what kind of water
you’ll be getting in a campground. It provides filtered water to your
kitchen sink and your icemaker.
- Professional wiring and breaker
panels: We use self-resetting circuit breakers, not fuses. All our
wiring is neat and orderly, safely routed and properly labeled.
- Storage bay floors: Our storage bay floors
are insulated, heated, carpeted, and they are protected underneath the
coach with a sheet of fiberglass. You won’t find bare steel exposed to
the elements.
- Drawers with full extension slides:
Our cabinet drawers are also the best. All hand made in our own shop, we
use full extension ball-bearing drawer slides for full access, strength,
and trouble-free operation with no rattles or wobbles.
- Ceramic tile floor standard in all kitchens and
bathrooms: Easier to keep and looks great!
And we extended that through the dining room and living room as
well. Only carpet is in the bedroom. MUCH easier to clean.
- Inverter standard: Inverters
generally make RV life much easier. Make coffee, dry your hair, watch TV,
cook your toast...all without starting your generator. Standard on every
Foretravel.
- Whole house electrical surge suppression system
standard on all coaches. Protect your appliances with this neat
feature.
- Flip-up color back up monitor
standard on all models. That too is only on the
newer coaches. Ours is the old fashioned one, but it works great.
- Consolidated components bay: Consolidates
all the “under-floor” components into one storage bay making the rest
of your storage bays more useable.
- Girard automatic patio awnings
standard on all U295 and U320 models. Push a button, it’s done.
Again, that's the newer ones. Ours is a Zip-Dee, and covers the door
as well.
- Porcelain toilets: Porcelain toilets make
you feel more at home. You wouldn’t have a plastic toilet in your home,
so why have one in your motorhome? Plus they’re prettier, more durable
and easy to clean.
- Steel sidewall to floor bushings:
We use steel bushings to provide a metal-to-metal connection between the
sidewall and floor. That way, the plywood sub-floor doesn’t get crushed
and the sidewall doesn’t loosen up down the road.
- Roof frame overlaps sidewall: By using a
special extrusion designed by and used only by Foretravel, our roof frame
overlaps the sidewall frame by 1-1/2” providing tremendous strength and
a leak-proof, dust-proof and draft-proof connection.
- Alcoa aluminum wheels with Dura-Bright:
Beautiful, shiny aluminum wheels that are easy to keep that way. The first
aluminum wheel you don’t polish or scrub – just spray with soap and
water. Ours are Alcoa, but we get to polish
them ourselves.
- Joey Bed: The original slide-out tray makes
it easy to access your stored stuff…standard on U295 and U320s.
- Air-operated step-well cover:
Our air-operated step well cover gives you a flat floor in front of the
co-pilot seat for added comfort. It’s also a lot safer than having that
exposed well. Open and close it at the touch of a button.
- Fiberglass sheet on inside of walls: Having
a continuous sheet of fiberglass on the inside of the sidewall, just under
the paneling adds strength and stability to the sidewall, provides better
insulation, reduces condensation considerably. I
didn't know about this feature, and scared myself when I drilled holes to
mount some hooks, and realized I'd drilled through fiberglass.
- Crowned roof: Foretravel puts
a crown in the roof of every coach. This insures water run off and
virtually eliminates the possibility of water pooling. The roof is also
strong enough to not only walk on, but will easily hold the weight of a
car.
- Larger holding tanks: Our gray water tank of
115 gal. will hold more than our fresh water tank of 112 gal. can put into
it. What good is a large water tank if you don’t have any place to put
it? Plus, our 56 gal black tank is more than adequate for extended “dry
camping”. Ours are a bit different.
Fresh, 102, gray 110, and black is 54. We've noticed that the gauges
for the gray and black swing together. When it's time to empty the
black, it's time to empty the gray. Handy.
- Stability of ownership:
Unlike so many other manufacturers, Foretravel has never been bought and
sold, and has never taken any kind of bankruptcy. In fact, the family that
started the company over thirty-five years ago is still running it.
- No pressed wood: We don’t use any water
absorbing pressed wood or cheap particle board products in our motorhomes.
We only use the finest grades of plywood and paneling, and, in fact, use
Marine Grade plywood for our sub-floor.
- Continuous run wiring: We
make our own 12v. and 110 v. wiring harnesses to eliminate splices and
tees and direct wire to each device. We also run extra wires just in case
you need them for something else later on.
- Residential carpet installation: Some
manufacturers put the carpet down first, then set the walls and cabinets
on top of it. At Foretravel, we carpet it like you would your home...heavy
foam pad, tack strips and cut to fit. Makes for a stronger unit and is
easier to change down the road.
- Full sized furniture: We know
you don’t get smaller when you travel in your motorhome. That’s why we
use only full-size furniture by Villa in every Foretravel. We feel you
should be as comfortable in your motorhome as in your “other” home.
- Removable fuel tank: Hopefully, you’ll
never need to, but if you do, our diesel fuel tank is fully removable for
easy replacement. In some coaches, you’d have to dismantle the coach to
get the tank out. And, it’s made of aluminum for lighter weight.
- Sliding shelf under kitchen sink:
Everything at your fingertips! You don’t have to get on your knees to
reach something way back in under the kitchen sink. Just slide the shelf
out for easy access to all your “under the sink” stuff.
- Flexible arm map lights for pilot and co-pilot:
As you navigate, these bright map lights illuminate without distracting.
They also flex so you can get the light exactly where you need it. Ours
is only on the co-pilot side, the pilot side is a normal light.
- Pulse arc welding: We use
special Pulse-Arc welding machines that allow deeper penetration of the
weld without the extraneous overheating that can cause warpage and
distortion of the steel. It just does a better job.
- Smart Wheel: The Smart Wheel
steering wheel, standard in every Foretravel, puts the headlamp flash,
marker lamp flash, cruise control and wiper/washer controls right at your
fingertips. Plus, the wheel tilts and telescopes for your driving comfort
and is lighted for easy night driving.
- Larger fuel tank: The
enormous 180 gallon diesel fuel tank, and the range it provides, makes
fuel stops few and far between. Ours is 194
gallons, but who's counting.
- Ducted air system: Our ducted air system
creates a quiet, cool environment, and lets you cool the front or rear
with either unit.
- Full 60” x 80” queen bed:
We don’t use a “funny” queen or “sorta” queen size mattress. You
won’t have to tailor your sheets to fit. In fact, you can buy queen
sheets right off the shelf in any store, and they’ll fit.
- Comfort Control System: This control system
allows you to control the cooling and heating of your Foretravel from one
easy location. It’s more like the thermostat you’re used to at home.
It puts you in complete control.
- Microwave accepts 9” x 13” pan:
This is pretty self-explanatory. You can now use a standard size pan in
your microwave/convection oven. (glass, of course) The cook will love it!
- Day/night shades: Have it light when you
want it and dark when you don’t. Day/Night shades are convenient, easy
to operate, look good and don’t rattle. Once you’ve had them, you’ll
never go back to mini-blinds.
- Leaf for dining table: When
you need it, it’s there. Made from matching Foretravel solid surface
material , just bring it out when you need extra table space and put it
away when you don’t. Standard on every Foretravel.
- Name brand appliances: When you use the
best, you simply have fewer problems and better service. We use names like
Dometic, Magic Chef, General Electric®, Sharp, Panasonic and other brands
you recognize. You won’t find some off-brand appliance in a Foretravel.
- Lighted storage bays: We
provide more than ample light for easy viewing and finding what you’re
searching for. No dark corners here!
- Manibloc water manifold: Like circuit
breakers for your water. If you need to cut off the water to only one
device (such as a faucet) you can do it with the Manibloc system and still
have water to everything else.
- Analog dash gauges: Our
analog dash gauges are great. They’re accurate, dependable, user
friendly, and easy to repair or replace when needed. The
dashboard flips up for easy access to the back of the gauges on ours.
- User friendly dash and cockpit switches:
Everything’s right at your fingertips. You don’t have to lean way
forward just to flash your clearance lights. We want you to be comfortable
and stay comfortable.
- Engine and generator access:
Easy to get to, easy to service. Rarely do you need to slide out the
generator, but when you do, you can. And, the engine access is so large
you can almost walk into it. This makes servicing a breeze.
- Floor protection in engine compartment: We
protect our floor with an aluminum wrap at the engine cutout. This
protects the plywood inner floor from moisture damage. This is one
you’ll really have to search for in other brands.
- Convenient utility station:
Everything in one place...hot and cold running water, water fill, soap,
paper towels, dump hose connection, shoreline, cable TV and more. And,
it’s all in a heated, weather-proof compartment!
- Sony entertainment system: Prepare to have
your senses excited. The sound quality from the Sony components coupled
with Bose speakers is terrific.
- Coach retrieval hitches:
Another feature we hope you never need. But, if you get your Foretravel
stuck in the mud, it’s really nice to have a place to hook-up to and
pull it out without damaging anything.
- Electric TV antenna: No more cranking cranks
or turning knobs. Now, it’s all done at the push of a button.
We're still young enough that we can crank cranks and turn knobs, which is
a handy thing because ours is manual! But there's a little light on
the dash and an alarm that goes off if the engine is started while it's
still up. Handy feature for those of us with on-again, off-again
memories.
- Electric windshield privacy shades:
While driving, use them for sun visors. While parked, use them for privacy
shades. Again, all at the push of a button. Again,
ours are manual.
- Television technology: Enjoy the very latest
in television viewing technology featuring flat screen and LCD TVs and
Plasma monitors. The crisp images from these state-of-the-art components
will leave you breathless. Rats! We have the
old ones, but they work better than the 1983 version we left in the
trailer.
- Remote jumper terminals:
Standard on U320s, these provide easy access for battery jumping if you
ever need them. Don't know about this.
Gotta go look sometime.
- Multiplex lighting control: All U295 and
U320s have this new method of controlling the lighting and other 12v.
systems in your coach. You’ll never have to search for a light switch
again. Newer coaches only I guess.
- Pneumatic seal for slide outs:
Seals out air, dust and water automatically. And, there’s no unsightly
flanges and gaskets on the side of your coach.
N/A for us. No slides.
- Higher GVWRs: Lots of payload to carry all
your stuff. If you use it all, you’re probably carrying too much.
One of the main reasons we like the coach. CCC of 5780#.
Weighed the coach today (8/29/03) with all the stuff I could cram into the
storage bays and the carpet replaced with heavy tile, and we're still
almost 600# underweight! Yaa Hoo!!
- Excellent paint: Wow! The
best paints, lots of clear coats and lots of sanding give Foretravel that
deep, glass-like exterior finish. It makes a big difference when you
really get up close. Take a look (and feel) for yourself.
Ours isn't painted.....yet.
- Automatic Traction Control: Automatically
helps keep your coach under control in slick road conditions. Just another
“peace of mind” feature.
- Keyless entry: Lock or unlock
your entry door or storage bay doors at the press of a button. No more
fumbling for keys. And, it’s standard on every Foretravel.
- Seamless end-caps: We hand-finish the seam
where our front and rear caps attach to the coach for a beautiful seamless
finish. It’s time-consuming, but it’s worth it.
- Parallel doors: Most of our
storage bay doors are the bus-style parallel type. They travel out and up
parallel to the side wall for easier access to your stored items. A
HUGE plus for a head-banger like me.
- Door bell: Built into the entry handle, it
allows your guests to announce their arrival. It’s a small thing, but
it’s really nice to have.
- The Foretravel Distinction:
We are recognized as the leader in motorhome quality and craftsmanship.
You’ll find this Foretravel brand of quality throughout the coach, not
only in the beauty and luxury you can see, but in places you’ll never
see.
“Experience Foretravel…it feels good”
Well, this was obviously written by the marketing group, but
it's all true insofar as we can ascertain.
And the specifications for a 1999 40' Foretravel U320 are as
follows:

We have some of those "popular options" mentioned,
like the Datron DSS Satellite System w/Sony Reciever. It is much like the
MotoSat we had in the trailer as far as functionality goes. The Hose &
Shorline Reels, which I think is well worth the money. Particularly in
this heat, when all I have to do is let the spring rewind itself. The
Splendide Washer/Dryer, which Barb loves. When we saw another coach with
the tile, well, what can I say. You've seen the pictures! And the
Trekmate Security System. The other "options" we have of course,
are the file drawers, the computer compartment, and that little shelf on the
dashboard. While it's not operational yet, we also have the SmartTire I
kept from the truck/trailer. We'll use it for the inside tires on the
coach, and all 4 wheels of the Jeep. As we live with this home, we'll
probably be adding things and changing things, and I'll update this page as we
do. So far, we're very happy with it. Of course, that doesn't keep
me from compiling a list of "wants" for an eventual upgrade, does it?
3/9/04
Thought I'd update this a bit, both to keep a record for
ourselves and to let you know what kind of stuff we've had done after nearly 7
months of ownership. Let me emphasize that we're happy with both the coach
and the treatment we've had by all the Foretravel people we've come in contact
with during this period.
To start with, every coach that carries the Forestar warrantee
goes through a pretty careful checkout before the new owner takes it. That
includes complete engine (both generator and main) service, a transmission
service, brake check, etc. Some cosmetic things may be done, like the
small gouge in the gelcoat we had repaired. The idea is that the company
wants every coach they sell to be in top condition. After this was done,
we made up our list of things we felt needed attention, and as we've continued
to travel in it, we've kept lists of things to be taken care of. Following
is the list as of today, and who paid for it and how much was paid.

planning on being in TX again until maybe 2006, they gave us a can of grout so
if it needs to be replaced again we'll have the same color. GREAT SERVICE
in our humble opinion.
